Posts about: dissapointment

One day over Christmas break my mom invited me to sit in on her Psychology class, and I thought, what the heck, I have nothing else better to do. I agreed and off we went. Upon arrival I was expecting everyone to look at me funny because they had never seen me before, but they didn't, and that kind of made me happy inside.

The teacher began speaking and I got inspired. This professor was one of those gifted people who could just speak and you would feel motivated and like you could change the whole world if you wanted to.

She began to talk about expectations, and a lot of things began to click in my head. She revealed to the class that when someone sets their expectations high, but don't receive those expectations in life, they live unhappily. She then went on to say that when someone sets their expectations low and don't receive high expectations, they're "okay", not quite happy, not quite unhappy.

What blew my mind was when she said the people who set their expectations lower, but receive high expectations, that those people live happily. While this may be stating the obvious and may be quite apparent, I'd never had it spelled out for me in quite that way.

She told the class that it wasn't that you COULDN'T have high expectations, goals, or dreams... but that by being realistic and moderating some of those expectations that as a person you would be a lot happier.

I always have low expectations, that's just me. So when someone does something nice, or something goes my way, I get super stoked.

This idea of expectations she presented enticed me to think, it evoked me to re-evaluate some things. It was good food for thought, so I thought I'd pass it on.
